The Royal Thai Army (RTA) is on the brink of a significant stride in enhancing its defense capabilities with the imminent procurement of the D-Iron, an advanced unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) crafted through collaboration between the Defence Technology Institute (DTI) and Estonian robotics manufacturer Milrem Robotics. Janes reported that recent trials in central Thailand, specifically in Saraburi, showcased the D-Iron’s prowess. Rigorous evaluations encompassed maneuverability tests in challenging terrains and assessments of its integrated weaponry, including the R400S-Mk2 Direct Drive-Heavy Duty remote weapon station (RWS) supplied by Electro Optic Systems, accompanied by the Northrop Grumman M230LF 30 mm machine gun.

Having successfully passed these trials under the RTA’s test and evaluation committee, the UGV’s journey now progresses to the final steps before procurement. The RTA’s materiel standardisation committee is poised to greenlight the acquisition, paving the way for contract finalization and allocation of production funding. The D-Iron’s multifaceted utility spans crucial roles within the RTA, from infantry support to border surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics, and counter-insurgency operations. This cutting-edge robotic combat vehicle is set to revolutionize the Thai military’s strategic approach and operational effectiveness.

Milrem Robotics, in anticipation of production support, looks forward to collaborating with local industries once the procurement receives the stamp of approval from the RTA’s materiel standardisation committee. The impending acquisition of the D-Iron signifies a monumental leap in the RTA’s modernization efforts, aligning it with global advancements in defense technology. This innovative platform not only demonstrates exceptional versatility but also echoes its successful integration within the Estonian Defense Force and other nations. Its global recognition as a formidable asset reinforces the anticipation and importance of its imminent induction within the RTA’s arsenal.

As showcased at the Defense & Security exhibition in Bangkok, the D-Iron’s autonomy and capabilities have attracted considerable attention. Milrem Robotics’ THeMIS RCV, equipped with the Intelligent Functions Kit (MIFIK), leverages state-of-the-art AI and machine learning algorithms. These capabilities empower the vehicle with autonomous operation, reducing reliance on direct human intervention in complex and dynamic environments. The integration of advanced sensors, obstacle recognition, avoidance systems, and real-time communication fortifies the D-Iron’s safety measures, ensuring mission success while elevating the efficiency of military operations. Its multifunctional roles spanning logistics, reconnaissance, and combat operations position it as an indispensable asset for modern armed forces.
