Switzerland has authorized the export of 25 Leopard 2A4 (Pz 87) main battle tanks to Germany. The Federal Council’s decision, finalized on November 22, 2023, follows a series of deliberations regarding the decommissioning of these tanks and their resale to Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH, the original manufacturer. This collaborative initiative was prompted by Germany’s request, as articulated by German Ministers Robert Habeck and Boris Pistorius earlier this year, aiming to bolster their tank inventory while assuring Switzerland that these tanks will remain within Germany or be allocated to NATO or EU member states. Crucially, both governments have underscored their commitment that these tanks will not be redirected to Ukraine. Switzerland’s military currently operates 134 modernized Leopard 2A4 WE tanks, a testament to its ongoing commitment to military enhancement as seen in the 2006 Armament Program. However, an additional 96 tanks of the same type, remaining unused and not modernized, prompted the decision for their decommissioning.

The Leopard 2 series, a flagship German main battle tank, embodies a rich lineage tracing back to the 1970s. Its continued service across various European and non-European countries signifies its enduring reliability and technological prowess. Switzerland’s involvement, specifically manufacturing the Leopard 2A4 as the Panzer 87 (Pz 87), further solidifies its historical connection and technological contribution to this esteemed tank’s legacy. The decision to decommission these tanks aligns with Switzerland’s commitment to strategic military planning and resource optimization. By approving their resale to Germany for refurbishment by Rheinmetall, Switzerland ensures a responsible transfer of military assets, contributing to the reinforcement of Germany’s tank capabilities without compromising regional stability. As these tanks undergo refurbishment and subsequent deployment within NATO or EU nations, Switzerland remains steadfast in upholding its commitment to responsible arms management and global stability. This collaborative effort not only strengthens bilateral ties between Switzerland and Germany but also underscores a collective commitment to ensuring a secure and stable European defense landscape.
