On the opening day of 11th International Defense Exhibition ’Partner 2023’, the participants had the opportunity to see the launch of the latest 155 mm self-propelled artillery weapon NORA B-52 NG ’Perun’, manufactured by Yugoimport-SDPR. While maintaining the same number of rounds and charges as its predecessor, the Nora B52 NG introduced several groundbreaking features that are set to redefine modern artillery systems. One of the standout features of the Nora B52 NG is its improved ammunition handling system. Unlike its predecessor, which had only 12 rounds in the autoloader, the new system boasts an impressive 30 rounds that can be loaded automatically, with only six being held in stowage. This upgrade not only enhances the vehicle’s sustained firepower but also streamlines the loading process, significantly reducing downtime between shots.
The Nora B52 NG sets a new standard by not only firing all NATO ammunition but also accommodating the NATO Modular Charge System, making mono-block charges compatible. This versatility allows for a broader range of mission options and operational flexibility, ensuring that the artillery piece can adapt to diverse combat scenarios. With a maximum rate of fire of 4 rounds per minute, the Nora B52 NG is a formidable presence on the battlefield. In cases where special rounds, such as guided projectiles or those longer than standard munitions, need to be loaded, a manual backup system is available. Equipped with a proven gun already used in previous Nora versions, the Nora B52 NG offers a range of 32.5 km with Extended Range Full Bore (ERFB) projectiles, 41.5 km with ERFB Base Bleed (BBs), and a remarkable 52 km with Velocity Enhanced Artillery Projectile (VLAPs). Moreover, it can execute three rounds in Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) mode, covering distances of up to 30 km with precision and devastating effect.
The Nora B52 NG features an inertial navigation system with satellite (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) backup. From the moment it comes to a halt, it requires only 60 seconds to be ready for firing the first round, thanks in part to hydraulic jacks that stabilize the platform. The howitzer offers a wide range of traverse and elevation, allowing it to engage targets effectively, even in direct fire missions if required. Mounted on a MAN 8×8 truck chassis, the Nora B52 NG benefits from a commercially available platform, eliminating export license complications. The four-man crew is accommodated in the truck cabin, ensuring their safety and comfort. The loader enters action only when manual loading is necessary, ensuring efficient and rapid reloading when needed.
The Nora B52 Next Generation represents a remarkable leap forward in the realm of self-propelled howitzers. Developed to meet the needs of the Serbian Army, it not only enhances the capabilities of existing artillery assets but also offers compatibility with the NATO Modular Charge System. With its impressive firepower, versatility, and ease of deployment, the Nora B52 NG is poised to become a valuable addition to any modern military’s arsenal. Serbia’s export of Nora B52 artillery systems to various nations underscores their trust in this cutting-edge technology. As the international demand for advanced artillery solutions continues to grow, the Nora B52 NG’s arrival on the scene is poised to meet the evolving needs of modern armed forces worldwide. Its combination of firepower, flexibility, and accuracy sets a new standard for self-propelled howitzers, making it a potent force multiplier on the modern battlefield.
