155mm howitzers employ a distinct loading approach known as separate loading ammunition. The M119A2 Propelling Charge is a single increment red bag charge which contains a base igniter pad with 4 ounces CBI powder and a center spot of 0.5 ounces of black powder. The charge is approximately 29 inches long by 6 inches in diameter and contains 20,9 pounds of M6 propellant. The forward end of the charge has a 3 ounces lead foil liner and four pockets sewn longitudinally to the circumference. Each of the four pockets contains 4 ounces of potas-sium sulfate to act as a flash reducer. This propelling charge is a Zone 7 red bag charge for firing in 155mm Howitzers containing M185 and M199 cannon tubes.
The 155mm M119A2 propelling charge is an integral part of artillery systems, offering exceptional ballistic performance and reliability. With a maximum firing range of 18,100 meters, it ensures that targets at extended distances can be engaged effectively. The impressive muzzle velocity of up to 684.3 m/s ensures rapid delivery of projectiles to the intended target. This propelling charge can withstand high pressures, with a maximum threshold of 2,170 bar. Its loading mechanism operates on a separate basis, ensuring precision and safety during the firing process. Upon firing the weapon, a flash from the primer ignites the CBI powder in the base igniter pad which ignites the black powder spot.
The M119A2 propelling charge boasts a weight of 10,000 kg and compact dimensions, with a length of 660mm and a diameter of 155mm. The use of GSB 131 Multiperforated powder and a suitable primer, either MK2A4 or M82 depending on the application, further enhances its performance and versatility.Operating within a wide temperature range, from -53 to +63 °C, this propelling charge proves its reliability in various environmental conditions. Its packing in metal/plastic containers, specifically the PA37 A1 type, ensures safe storage and transport. When packed on a pallet, 12 metal/plastic containers can be accommodated, making logistics and handling efficient. The overall dimensions of these pallets measure 1,000 x 800 x 805mm, with a total volume of 0.644 m3 and a weight of 235 kg.
