Rostec has delivered an additional batch of upgraded 120-mm mortar systems, known as the 2S12A “Sani,” to the Russian military as part of this year’s state defense order. The companyas announced a doubling of Sani production this year to meet the high demand. The Russian Ministry of Defense will receive twice as many mortar systems in 2023 compared to 2022. These systems are highly anticipated on the frontlines. the Sani 120mm 2S12 carrier mortar offers a potent combination of mobility, range, firepower, and rapid deployment capabilities. Its main characteristics make it an invaluable asset for defense purposes, enabling effective support for ground forces and providing a significant deterrent to potential threats.
The 2S12A “Sani” 120mm carrier mortar was specifically designed to effectively neutralize enemy targets, including those in deep shelters and on the reverse slopes of hills. Its capabilities include engaging firing points, command posts, trenches, and creating passages in barbed wire. It can also illuminate the front line of defense and deploy smoke screens. The “Sani” system’s mobility, known as the “Sled,” enables it to function as a versatile roaming mortar. With a weight of 230 kilograms in the action position and 360 kilograms in the travelling position, the mortar is designed for versatility and ease of mobility. By operating independently and frequently changing positions, it confuses the enemy regarding the firepower and size of available forces.
The firing range of the Sani 120mm 2S12 is exceptional, with a maximum range of 7,100 meters and a minimum range of 480 meters, enabling it to engage targets both near and far. The rate of aimed fire is also impressive, with the system capable of delivering up to 10 rounds per minute. This rapid rate of fire ensures a high level of suppressive capability and provides effective support to ground forces. The system offers great flexibility in terms of traverse, with the bipod allowing for a ±5-degree traverse, while the moving bipod enables a full 360-degree traverse. This allows for effective targeting and engagement of various targets within the mortar’s firing arc.
The 2S12A “Sani” 120mm carrier mortar incorporates the 2B11 mortar, which boasts a high rate of fire and combat accuracy, with an effective range exceeding 7 kilometers. The complex’s ammunition is designed to accommodate over fifty shots. Moreover, the “Sled” can be used alongside the “Gran” guided weapon system for precision targeting. The Sani transport vehicle, based on the Ural off-road platform, demonstrates impressive mobility, capable of traveling up to 1000 km without refueling, whether on roads or rough terrains. The mortar is unloaded from the vehicle using an electric winch, while its wheel travel facilitates movement to the firing position by the crew. Transitioning the mortar from travel to combat and vice versa takes less than three minutes.
