Larsen & Toubro Secures Teevra 40 Naval Gun System Contract from Indonesian Navy

Indian multinational conglomerate company Larsen & Toubro, commonly known as L&T has secured a contract to deliver Teevra 40 naval gun systems to the Indonesian Navy, which marks the first-ever export of the weapon system from India to Indonesia. Global open-source intelligence company Janes reported that L&T will supply the company’s Teevra 40 system and the weapon will go onboard one of the Indonesian Navy’s Teluk Bintuni-class landing ships.  L&T will work with Indonesian defence firm BTI Defence on the contract, and the latter will provide after-sales service for the weapon system while it is operational.

The Teluk Bintuni class is a class of tank landing ships that is being built indigenously for the Indonesian Navy. It was announced that the Indonesian Navy intends to acquire a total of twelve vessels of the same class with some modifications from the lead ship to improve ship’s capability. The ship is armed with light defensive weapons in form of a Bofors 40 mm gun and two 12.7 mm heavy machine guns. With a crew of 119, consisting of 113 sailors and 6 helicopter crew, she has a displacement of 2,300 tonnes and has a maximum speed of 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph). The vessel could also carry four LCVP boats, and is equipped with a crane for cargo loading and offloading.

The Teevra 40 is a naval gun system based on the Sudarshan Close-in Weapon System (CIWS). The Teevra 40 is a naval gun system that has a maximum range of about 11,800 m. For surface targets, it has an effective range of about 3,500 m while for aerial targets, the effective range is about 4,500 m. It can fire various 40 mm/L70 standard NATO rounds. The weapon features five firing modes, namely, the single-shot mode, the full auto mode, the three-shot burst, and the five-shot burst. In addition, the system also has a warning shot mode, which keeps the gun’s targeting cross-hairs on the objective but firing projectiles away at a predetermined safe distan

The product has been touted to be indigenously designed and developed with a level of indigenous content unparalleled by any other system. J.D Patil – now a Member of the Executive Committee of Management at Larsen and Toubro and Advisor to Defence & Smart Technologies to the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of L&T. It comes equipped with a 3D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) four-faceted radar, which allows the end-user complete surveillance coverage. The Sudarshan Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) has completed the No-Cost No-Commitment (NCMC) evaluations for the Indian Air Forces (IAF) 240-guns program.
