AM General LLC, South Bend, Indiana, was awarded a $732,741,016 modification to contract W56HZV-17-D-0071 for production of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle Expanded Capacity Vehicle (HMMWV ECV) variants. The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV; colloquial: Humvee) is a family of light, four-wheel drive, military trucks and utility vehicles produced by AM General. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 31, 2024. U.S. Army Contracting Command, Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, is the contracting activity.
The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) has largely supplanted the roles previously performed by the original jeep, and others such as the Vietnam War-era M151 jeep, the M561 “Gama Goat”, their M718A1 and M792 ambulance versions, the Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle, and other light trucks. Primarily used by the United States military, it is also used by numerous other countries and organizations and even in civilian adaptations. — HMMWV is the world-standard family of light, tactical vehicles. It is a lightweight, high-performance, independent four-wheel drive, versatile and adaptable platform that currently supports more than 100 different systems.
The HMMWV ECV with its vetronics is the 4th generation design of the HMMWV. Under contract to the US Army, AM General developed the M1113 Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV). The M1097A2 is the basis for the Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV). The expanded capacity vehicle (ECV) HMMWV was developed to carry high payloads with the same performance levels. The most common vehicle weighs 2.5t and has a payload capacity of 5,100lb. The ECV provided the payload capacity allowing for larger and heavier communications shelters, improved armor protection level for scouts, military police, security police, and explosive ordnance disposal platforms.
The HMMWV ECV has over 15 configurations such as cargo carriers, troop carriers, armament carriers, ambulance and shelter carriers. All the variants have a common chassis, engine and transmission, as well as 44 interchangeable parts fitted in various positions. The key vehicles of this model comprise of the M1113, M1114, M1116, M1151 w/AC, M1151A, M1151A1 w/B1, M1152 w/AC, M1152A1, M1152A1 w/B2, M1165 w/AC, M1165A1 and M1165A1 w/B3. In addition to the factory-installed “A” armor kit, the HMMWV ECV can be supplemented with additional armor, which is tailored to meet specific mission requirements. It is powered by a turbocharged 6.5l V8 diesel engine.
