Raytheon Anschütz, a business of Raytheon Technologies, delivered a state-of-the-art integrated navigation system (INS) to the Canadian Coast Guard’s brand-new Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV). Currently under construction at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards (Seaspan), the sophisticated OOSV will serve multiple tasks, including oceanographic, fishery, geological and hydrographic survey missions. The INS recently completed the factory acceptance test successfully at Thales Canada, which was selected after a competitive bid process by Seaspan as the electronic systems integrator. The INS will be integrated with the command and control (C2) system and the integrated platform management system (IPMS) to optimize mission capabilities on the bridge.

“The delivery marks another important milestone in our long-term partnership with Thales Canada. Together with Thales, we can provide the Canadian Coast Guard with a reliable and highly efficient bridge system, customized to support the demanding missions of the OOSV. We want to leverage the experiences and synergies collected during our successful performance and cooperation to continue our strong support for Thales Canada,” said Kevin Overmoyer, business development and sales manager for Raytheon Anschütz in Canada.

The system consists of eight Synapsis NX multifunctional workstations which provide a broad, functional range of capabilities for precise and safe navigation and other mission-related tasks. It also includes a virtual electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) as planning station, bridge navigational watch alarm system (BNWAS), fuel-efficient and precise autopilots, winterized radars and a redundant, maintenance-free gyro compass system. The core of the system – the Synapsis integration platform – allows the integration of multiple navigational sensors and ensures a consistent, clear presentation and handling of data, targets and alarms at any connected workstation.

Raytheon Anschütz is also providing comprehensive training, material and expertise for Thales Canada to grow an in-house capability to provide and integrate the navigation systems. Seaspan is the government of Canada’s chosen non-combat shipbuilder under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and is responsible for building the next generation of non-combat vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Under this strategy, Raytheon Anschütz already delivered integrated bridge and navigation systems to Canada’s new Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV), CCGS Sir John Franklin, CCGS Capt. Jacques Cartier and CCGS John Cabot. Raytheon Anschütz GmbH headquartered in Kiel, Germany delivers high-quality navigation solutions and strong, customer-oriented services worldwide.
