NHIndustries completes final delivery of the Italian Navy NH90 MITT Tactical Transport Helicopter fleet. In line with the contractual schedule and Customer expectations, on August 26th NHIndustries completed the final delivery of an NH90 MITT (Maritime – Italian Navy Tactical Transport) helicopter to the Italian Navy. The aircraft is the last of ten MH-90s, which the Italian Navy will use for amphibious support and Special Forces’ operations. The aircraft – designated ‘MH-90’ by its operator – is the result of strong cooperation between the customer and industry. From Leonardo’s Venice-Tessera plant, the MH-90 was assembled, flight tested, and delivered on schedule to the Italian Navy’s Main Operating Base in Luni.
The MH-90 combines the main features of the type for land tactical transport duties, such as the rear ramp and mission equipment, together with the features of the naval NH90, for instance the optimized landing gear and dynamics for ship operations. The MITT variant will add to the NFH (NATO Frigate Helicopter) aircraft in-service and on order by the Italian Navy for other specialised tasks of which 38 have been delivered to date. The MH-90 is part of the Italian Navy’s modernisation plans to cope with the ever-evolving range of mission requirements and operational scenarios by deploying the most advanced technology available today.
The NHIndustries NH90 is a medium-sized, twin-engine, multi-role military helicopter. It was developed in response to NATO requirements for a battlefield helicopter which would also be capable of being operated in naval environments. The NH90 was developed and is manufactured by NHIndustries, a collaborative company owned by Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo (formerly AgustaWestland) and Fokker Aerostructures. In June 2000, Italy signed an initial contract for a batch of 60 TTH (Tactical Transport Helicopter) for the Italian Army, along with a further 46 NFH (NATO Frigate Helicopter) and 10 TTH for the Italian Navy.
