Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) is part of the European iMUGS (integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System) project. A consortium of 14 companies from seven European countries and the European Commission signed a contract that will receive over EUR 32 million in funding. iMUGS will be a cooperation between 14 companies drawn from across Europe: Project Coordinator Milrem Robotics (Estonia), GT Cyber Technologies (Estonia), Safran Electronics & Defense (France), NEXTER Systems (France), Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (Germany), Diehl Defence (Germany), Bittium Wireless (Finland), Insta DefSec (Finland), (Un)Manned (Belgium), dotOcean (Belgium), Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (Latvia), GMV Aerospace and Defence (Spain), The Estonian Military Academy and Royal Military Academy of Belgium.

The research and development contract from the European Defence Industry Development Programme (EDIDP) is driving forward the development and definition of technologies to be used in unmanned systems (Multipurpose Unmanned Ground System, MUGS). This modular and scaleable architecture for hybrid manned and unmanned systems is being developed under the leadership of Milrem Robotics. The prototype system will use the THeMIS UGV from Milrem Robotics – equipped with a specific list of payloads. Among other things, KMW will be responsible for the interaction and control of manned and unmanned systems – including drones. For this purpose, mission scenarios will be developed to define the coordinated action of soldier and system. It is expected that the results of the trials and developments will be demonstrated in the autumn of 2022.

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) is a defence company based in Munich, Germany. The company produces various types of equipment as well as railroad locomotives, tanks, self-propelled artillery, and other armoured vehicles. Krauss-Maffei Wegmann should not be confused with a separate present-day company, KraussMaffei Group, which is also descended from the original Krauss-Maffei merger. In 2015, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann merged with the French state-owned defence company Nexter Systems. KMW is now a subsidiary of a newly formed holding company, 50% of which are in turn controlled by the former owners of the German company.
