The JSC PO Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk in the northern Arkhangelsk Region has floated out the Project 885M Yasen-M first serial-produced nuclear-powered submarine Novosibirsk. The nuclear-powered Project 885 attack submarine is being built by the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, Russia. The Russian Navy currently operates the Project 885 Yasen nuclear-powered submarine Severodvinsk. The Project 885M Yasen-M lead submarine Kazan is undergoing trials.
The first submarine in the class, Severodvinsk, was delivered to the Russian Navy in 2013, twenty years after it was laid down in 1993. Following sea trials, the submarine was commissioned in 2014. The submarine is set to enter service in 2020. The Project 885 and 885M nuclear-powered subs carry Kalibr-PL and/or Oniks cruise missiles. Eventually, they will get Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. The Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) is currently building six Project 885M nuclear-powered submarines. In 2019, the Shipyard signed a contract on building two more submarines of this Project.
The Yasen class, Russian designations Project 885 Yasen and Project 885M Yasen-M (Aash Tree), also referred to as Graney class, are series of newest nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines designed by Malakhit and being constructed by Sevmash for the Russian Navy. Based on the Akula class and Alfa class designs, the Yasen class is projected to replace Russian Navy’s current Soviet-era nuclear attack submarines. The Yasen-class submarines were designed by the Malakhit Central Design Bureau, which was formed by the combination of SKB-143 and TsKB-16.
The JSC PO Sevmash is a Russian joint-stock enterprise under the vertically integrated United Shipbuilding Corporation. The shipbuilding operations of the JSC PO Sevmash is in the port city of Severodvinsk on the White Sea in the Russian Federation. The name Sevmash is an abbreviation of Severnoye Mashinostroitelnoye Predpriyatie (Northern Machine-Building Enterprise). Sevmash is the largest singular shipbuilding enterprise in Russia and today the country’s only nuclear submarine producer. Based in the city of Severodvinsk in Arkhangelsk Oblast on the White Sea, its facilities occupy an area of more than 300 hectares and it has more than 100 subdivisions.
