Pearson Engineering Route Opening and Clearing Capability (PEROCC) provides a single platform solution to the requirements of counter-IED activity through the application of a suite of tools to a chassis, with the capability to detect explosive threats and proof routes at tempo whilst maintaining a high level of self-protection. PEROCC is designed to provide an in-stride blast repairable route proofing and IED clearance capability that allows a wider range of IED defeat requirements to be met using a single platform more efficiently and at higher tempo than is currently being achieved. The suite of tools is optimized for a commercially available pivot steer loader. Whilst on operations all systems – rollers, interrogation arm and weapon station – can be controlled from within the armored crew compartment. Storage space on the vehicle can be configured to carry spare roller sets and blast-off wheels allowing for rapid repair/replacement in stride.

Route proofing is provided by the full width counter-Mine and counter-IED rollers which, in keeping with other Pearson Engineering roller systems, are intended to detonate and neutralize pressure fused explosive devices. Hydraulic power is used to transfer a proportion of the vehicle weight onto the rollers in order to generate a maximum push down force of 550kg/1213lbs per roller wheel. Frangible joints allow the roller banks to readily detach from the chassis in the event of a blast. Hydraulically operated pins allow the front and rear equipment to be jettisoned quickly in an emergency and enable rapid replacement. This feature also allows the ability to integrate existing or emerging electronic detection capabilities on the same platform as the full width roller. PEROCC includes Blast-Off Wheels. In the event of a blast under one of the vehicle wheels it will readily detach from the axle, thus reducing the transfer of blast energy into the vehicle, reducing harmful acceleration effects on the crew and enabling rapid replacement/repair.

The 3 seat crew compartment for Driver, Gunner and Commander is protected from beneath by an armoured double V-shaped hull for blast deflection. The upper hull is protected by applique composite armour panels which provide blast and ballistic protection. Protection is to STANAG 3 level and above. Blast attenuating seats mitigate the acceleration effects on the crew during an explosive event. Climate control optimizes crew comfort in a range of operating environments. PEROCC is operated by three crew; Driver/Arm operator, Gunner and Commander. The standard operating controls from the base vehicle are retained in the driving position at the front of the crew compartment. The Driver controls the vehicle and operates the roller system and arm. The Gunner is positioned immediately behind the driver and controls the Overhead Weapon Station. The Commander sits in the highest position at the rear of the crew compartment in order to maximize situational awareness. Both Gunner and Commander can monitor GPR equipment. All crew members have excellent all round visibility and simultaneous access to indirect vision cameras.

PEROCC includes the option of a Remote Weapon Station (RWS) fitted with (1) of the following weapons: 12.7mm Heavy Machine Gun, 7.62mm MG, 5.56mm MG or 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher. in order to provide a self-protection capability. In its current configuration PEROCC is shown with a Konsberg CROWS RWS. A powerful articulated arm provides interrogation and manipulation capabilities for the inspection of suspicious objects and areas. When stowed the arm is protected from blast damage by the hull of the vehicle. The arm can also be used as a crane in order to carry out any necessary running repairs on the vehicle and its equipment. The arm, based on a commercially available system, provides a flexible platform to determine the location of emplaced IEDs and IED components and deal with them from a safe stand-off distance. It reduces and potentially removes the need for soldiers to dismount to inspect suspect areas and enables faster, more effective and safer electronic detection. A variety of tools, interchangeable from under armour, are available including a ripper claw, bucket, grapple and ground penetrating radar array.
