The next generation corvette ships are based on proven design philosophies and technologies. The hybrid design with a reinforced steel hull, combined with a lightweight composite superstructure, enhances performance and reduces life-cycle cost. The well-balanced design makes the ships robust and affordable with unparallelled flexibility to handle multiple roles. Experience and solutions from numerous ship projects are contributing to the next generation Corvette design ensuring low project risks.
Technologies, solutions and experience gained from the Visby corvettes and other vessels have been used to develop Saab’s next generation Corvette ships with lengths ranging from 70 to 110 metres. The ships are flexible and multi-mission capable and can be used on a broad spectrum of missions. These include surface combat, anti-submarine warfare (ASW), air defence and patrol.
Next generation Corvette ships are available in different hull configurations: all-composite carbon fibre, as on the 650-tonne VISBY corvettes, or hybrid designs with a steel hull and a composite superstructure.
The latter utilises the Kockums-developed Composite Superstructure Concept, which has been successfully exported to the Indian Navy and to Singapore.
Saab’s next generation Corvette is a flexible and robust vessel with true multi-function capability in a compact size. It is designed to master in littorals and blue water operations, and is capable also in harsh conditions. With its state of the art sensor and weapon suite, it is effective against threats in all domains.
Saab’s next generation Corvette is a concept within our family of ships with focus on the main mission capabilities:
Anti-Air Warfare (AAW)
Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW)
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
Land Attack
Mine Laying
Protect Sea Lines of Communication (SLOC)
Intelligence gathering
International operations
National Support

FEATURES
To fulfil the various missions, the ship has sensors for high degree of situational awareness and is equipped with effective weapon systems to counter different threats. With high speed and long range, the next generation Corvette can perform successful operations in large geographical areas. It can also take a more active and flexible part in naval operations than traditional single role vessels. To achieve this, the design includes the following features:
MULTI-MISSION FLEXIBILITY
Large deck-area in the stern for handling mission equipment such as mine laying, unmanned vehicles, extra RHIBs and containerized mission modules.
Stern ramp for launch and recovery of unmanned vehicles (USV) and RHIBs up to 11m.
Large helicopter deck with hangar for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or 12 tonne helicopter.
Mission Modules, fit for ten standard TEU.
STEEL AND COMPOSITE
Hull in high tensile steel
Superstructure in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) for better performance, signature, weight, maintenance and stability.
STATE-OF-THE ART SENSOR AND WEAPON SUITE
Effective Command, Control & Communications and sensor suite.
Weapon suite with vertical launched surface to air missiles, surface to surface missiles, torpedos, medium and small caliber guns.
Integrated mast with dual surveillance radars.
MODERN SHIP DESIGN
All operational and accommodation spaces located above waterline.
Built-in flexibility for future upgrades.
Design according to classification society Naval standards
