The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has officially formally accepted four Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters into service during a ceremony held at the 9th Aviation Battalion on September 18, 2026. Presided over by the Commander of the Army Aviation Center, the formal induction represents a crucial milestone in modernizing the service’s rotary-wing fleet. Operating across expansive territorial land borders, active insurgency zones, and disaster-prone regions, Thailand relies heavily on medium-lift multirole assets to maintain tactical mobility and operational readiness throughout its area of responsibility.
Unlike regional allies benefiting from direct military assistance programs, Bangkok must procure its defense hardware primarily through its constrained national defense budget supplemented by modest security aid grants. Thailand initially introduced early variants of the H-60 platform in small quantities to meet its core air-mobility requirements. However, rather than standardizing its force structure around a single operational fleet, the RTA has systematically acquired mixed batches of diverse foreign platforms, such as selecting the heavier Airbus EC725 (now H225M) over the HH-60M variant for dedicated search-and-rescue (SAR) roles due to payload and endurance specifications.
The recent induction traces back to procurement efforts executed via the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) framework, making Thailand the pioneer Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) operator to field the advanced UH-60M variant. Following an initial US State Department approval for three aircraft under a July 2011 notification, the RTA subsequently finalized Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) to incrementally fund and deliver the aircraft. The successful integration of this batch closes out long-standing procurement lines intended to bolster the country’s rapid-reaction capabilities against both conventional and asymmetric threats.
Developed to extend the operational life of the combat-proven Black Hawk family into the mid-21st century, the UH-60M incorporates significant performance and technological upgrades over legacy UH-60A/L models. Powered by upgraded General Electric T700-GE-701D engines and featuring wide-chord composite rotor blades, the platform delivers improved lift capacity, climb rates, and hot-and-high performance. Additionally, the variant features a fully integrated digital glass cockpit, advanced flight controls, and modern navigation systems designed to increase situational awareness and tactical survivability in complex combat environments.
