The Philippine Air Force (PAF) and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) have reinforced their expanding defense partnership through a joint flight exercise conducted within Philippine airspace. The maneuver brought together a PAF Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) FA-50PH Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft and a JASDF Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform. Executed while the Japanese contingent was returning home following its participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the activity extended beyond a routine transit flight to highlight deepening operational coordination, tactical integration, and mutual readiness between the two air services amid evolving regional security dynamics.
For Manila, the engagement underscores the PAF’s strategic commitment to expanding operational ties with like-minded regional partners while modernizing its tactical aviation assets. The PAF currently operates a fleet of 11 FA-50PH Block 50 aircraft out of an original batch of 12 delivered by May 2017. Derived from the South Korean supersonic T-50 Golden Eagle family co-developed by KAI and Lockheed Martin, these light fighters are presently undergoing mid-life upgrades to the Block 60 configuration, with a subsequent Block 70 modernization package planned. Furthermore, the Philippines has placed orders for an additional 12 FA-50PH Block 70 units to augment its light fighter force structure.
The inclusion of the JASDF’s E-2D Hawkeye provided vital exposure to advanced airborne surveillance and command-and-control operations during the joint serial. The E-2D represents the latest iteration of Northrop Grumman’s twin-turboprop tactical AEW platform, featuring a distinctive 24-foot (7.3 m) rotating radar dome mounted above the fuselage to house primary long-range radar and identification friend-or-foe (IFF) antenna systems. Powered by twin Allison T56 turboprop engines, the E-2D builds upon decades of carrier-capable Hawkeye operational evolution, integrating modern sensor suites designed to manage complex air pictures and enhance situational awareness across maritime and littoral domains.
Japan’s deployment of the Advanced Hawkeye reflects the JASDF’s ongoing modernizations of its airborne early warning inventory, which comprised six E-2D units alongside ten legacy E-2C variants as of early 2023. By pairing advanced AEW capabilities with light combat platforms in joint airspace, both air forces demonstrated a commitment to building a more interoperable, stable, and resilient regional air defense environment. The combined exercise marks another practical step forward in bilateral defense cooperation, laying the groundwork for more complex domain-awareness and coalition operations between Japan and the Philippines in the Indo-Pacific region.
