France’s defense procurement agency (Direction générale de l’armement, DGA) has confirmed the successful maiden flight of the first Archange intelligence aircraft—a significant milestone in the modernization of the country’s strategic signals intelligence (SIGINT) capability. The aircraft, based on the Dassault Aviation Falcon 8X business jet, has been extensively modified to serve as a high-performance intelligence platform for the French Air Force. The Archange (Avion de Renseignement à CHArge utile de Nouvelle GÉnération) program seeks to replace aging platforms such as the C-160G Gabriel, decommissioned in 2022. The newly developed aircraft will provide France with advanced capabilities in the detection, collection, and analysis of radar and communications signals across a wide operational envelope.

Under current plans, three Archange aircraft will be delivered across the 2025–2028 timeframe, in line with France’s 2024–2030 Military Programming Law. The aircraft will be operated by Electronic Squadron 00.054 “Dunkerque” at Évreux-Fauville Air Base and will represent a cornerstone in France’s strategic intelligence framework. Each Archange platform is being equipped with the Capacité Universelle de Guerre Électronique (CUGE) mission suite, developed by Thales DMS and Thales SIX. The CUGE system features high-sensitivity multi-polarization antennas, AI-powered signal processing, and a fully integrated communications architecture including high-speed SATCOM and tactical datalinks. This enables near-real-time intelligence dissemination in joint and coalition operations.

Compared to its predecessor, the Falcon 8X-based Archange aircraft boasts a significant leap in performance—offering double to triple the range and endurance, a higher operating altitude of up to 15,500 meters (50,000 feet), and a lower radar cross-section, improving both survivability and mission flexibility in contested environments. The platform is designed to integrate with France’s broader defense ecosystem, including the Future Combat Air System (SCAF), SCORPION land warfare program, and NATO’s C4ISR architecture. The Archange system is expected to become a critical node in multi-domain operations, providing strategic-level SIGINT across air, land, sea, and space domains. A full training and simulation suite is being developed alongside the aircraft to support crew readiness and long-term sustainment. This includes mission rehearsal capabilities and dedicated facilities tailored to the specific demands of high-end SIGINT operations.

Until the Archange fleet becomes fully operational, France has relied on interim solutions such as the ALSR “Vador” ISR aircraft based on the King Air 350 platform, MQ-9 Reaper drones with electronic payloads, and modernized Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft. Additionally, France’s space-based SIGINT capabilities are provided by the CERES satellite constellation, launched in 2021. However, these platforms only provide partial coverage compared to the capabilities of the retired Gabriel aircraft. The C-160 Gabriel had supported both French and NATO surveillance missions, including operations over the Baltic and Black Seas. According to a 2022 parliamentary report by MP Jean-Jacques Ferrara, the Gabriel delivered a unique capability that “satellites or drones cannot fully replace.” With deliveries scheduled for 2025, 2026, and 2028, the Archange program is set to restore and expand France’s long-range electronic intelligence capabilities. It reinforces the country’s commitment to operational superiority and its role in European and allied defense architecture.
