Germany and Patria have signed today a work package covering the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme-related mortar variants development and qualification for Bundeswehr. The German Army was looking for a new mortar carrier to replace its M113 as part of the programme ZukSysIndF kRw (Zukünftiges System Indirektes Feuer kleiner Reichweite). The work package takes place under the CAVS research and development agreement, into which Germany has accessed in 2024. The scope of the work package includes building of CAVS NEMO and CAVS mortar command & control variants, their integration with German mission systems and the qualification of the entire system to German customer requirements. The value of the agreement is approximately 50 million Euros, further details of the scope are not publicly disclosed. The now signed CAVS work package offers an opportunity for other participating nations in the programme – present or future – to benefit of the results of this work package.

“Patria is very pleased to see Germany signing the first national CAVS variants development and qualification agreement. The 120 mm turreted mortar variant adds totally new performance to the international CAVS programme, and we trust that other participants of the programme will be very interested in this advanced capability. The development and qualification of these new CAVS variants will be done in close co-operation with the German industry, and the future serial production will be realised with our earlier published industrial partners KNDS, FFG and JWT“, says Jukka Holkeri, Executive Vice President, Global, Patria.

NEMO (from “NEw MOrtar”) is a single barrelled 120 mm remote-controlled mortar turret currently being developed by Patria Land Oy in Finland. It is a lighter version of the AMOS mortar system, which has been in use within the Finnish Defence Forces since 2013. The NEMO can be fitted to most APCs and also to smaller landing craft, such as the Finnish Jurmo-class landing craft. CAVS NEMO variant is based on combining the market available Patria 6×6 vehicle and Patria’s NEMO 120 mm turreted mortar system, both being market leaders in their own segments.

The Patria 6×6 (Patria XA-300) is a six-wheeled armoured personnel carrier produced by the Finnish defence industry company Patria. In early 2020 Finland, Estonia and Latvia agreed a joint development programme for Common Armoured Vehicle Systems (CAVS) based on Patria 6×6. In 2022, Sweden and Germany joined the CAVS Programme. The programme remains open for other nations to join it. Within the CAVS programme, the 6×6 armoured vehicle system development is led by Patria, that has more than four decades of experience in developing and delivering state-of-the-art protected troop transportation and system integration. Vast majority of supply of the vehicles is conducted by utilising the member nations’ local industry capabilities and every new nation is inherently reinforcing the security of supply for the whole collaboration system. Patria has already received orders for over 800 Patria 6×6 vehicles and has delivered more than 200 vehicles. The programme is open to European countries with similar equipment requirements, by mutual consent of the participating countries.
