South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) has launched a KRW47.6 billion (USD34.3 million) programme to upgrade the Republic of Korea Army’s (RoKA’s) fleet of K808 White Tiger wheeled armoured personnel carriers (APCs). The initiative, scheduled to run until 2029, is aimed at improving the vehicles’ mission performance, networked capabilities, and survivability in contested environments. The upgrade will integrate a suite of new subsystems into selected vehicles, including an undisclosed remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS), Tactical Multiband Multirole Radios (TMMRs), omnidirectional surveillance cameras, and digital display systems. Together, these additions are expected to enhance situational awareness, command-and-control connectivity, and firepower. While DAPA did not confirm suppliers, the RCWS is likely to be sourced from Hanwha Systems, which produces a family of such systems for domestic and export markets.
The TMMR is almost certainly LIG Nex1’s system of the same name, designed to enable real-time information sharing and integration with the RoK Armed Forces’ battalion-level battle command system. The inclusion of the TMMR is viewed as central to the modernisation effort. Once installed, the radios will allow K808 crews to share operational data across multiple echelons, improving interoperability and responsiveness during combined-arms operations. The omnidirectional surveillance suite and digital display upgrades are expected to bolster crew awareness in urban and complex terrain, where ambush risk is heightened. In a statement, General Koh Hyung-seok, head of DAPA’s battle manoeuvrability unit, said the programme reflects both domestic and global trends in armoured vehicle development.
The K808/806 White Tiger Armored Personnel Carrier is part of a family of 8×8 and 6×6 wheeled armoured vehicles developed by Hyundai Rotem, a (subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group), as a private venture beginning in 2012. The vehicle was selected by DAPA following competition with Doosan’s Black Fox and Samsung Techwin’s MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). The Republic of Korea Army’s (RoKA’s) has plans to acquire up to 600 units in both configurations, intended to provide rapid deployment forces similar in concept to U.S. Army Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCTs). The vehicle layout features a front-mounted engine on the left, with the driver positioned to its right. The troop compartment at the rear accommodates 10 fully equipped soldiers plus two crew. Entry and egress is enabled via a rear automatic ramp or four roof hatches.
The baseline K808/806 White Tiger Armored Personnel Carrier features an all-welded steel hull providing protection against small-arms fire and artillery fragments. The platform can be fitted with add-on armour for increased ballistic resistance and incorporates an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection system. The 8×8 variant offers a higher level of inherent protection than the 6×6. DAPA’s upgrade initiative reflects Seoul’s continuing emphasis on digitalisation and network-centric operations across its ground forces. The enhancements are designed to extend the relevance of the K808/806 armored personnel carrier fleet into the next decade, while aligning the RoKA’s wheeled combat units with emerging doctrine for fast-moving, information-enabled manoeuvre warfare.
