In a significant step forward for modern armoured warfare, Germany has signed a pivotal work package agreement with Patria under the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme. This development marks a major milestone in the German Army’s quest to replace its aging M113 fleet as part of the Zukünftiges System Indirektes Feuer kleiner Reichweite (ZukSysIndF kRw ) initiative, which focuses on enhancing indirect fire capabilities for short-range missions.
Under this €50 million agreement, Patria will spearhead the development and qualification of two critical variants for the Bundeswehr: the CAVS NEMO mortar system and the CAVS Mortar Command & Control variant. These systems will be seamlessly integrated with German mission-specific technologies, ensuring compliance with the nation's rigorous operational requirements. The collaboration also opens doors for other participating nations within the CAVS framework to leverage these advancements, fostering collective growth in armoured vehicle capabilities.
Spotlight on the CAVS NEMO Mortar Variant
At the heart of this programme lies the revolutionary NEMO 120 mm turreted mortar system , developed by Patria Land Oy in Finland. A lighter yet highly advanced version of the renowned AMOS mortar system, NEMO is designed as a single-barrelled, remote-controlled turret capable of being mounted on most armoured personnel carriers (APCs) or smaller landing craft.
The CAVS NEMO variant combines the market-leading Patria 6×6 vehicle platform with the cutting-edge NEMO mortar system, delivering unparalleled firepower and mobility. With its ability to provide rapid, precise indirect fire support, the NEMO-equipped CAVS vehicles are set to redefine battlefield dynamics.
