Introducing MSHORAD

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the Giraffe 1X radar for one of Sweden’s Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) solutions. The contract period is 2024-2027 and the order value is approximately SEK 700 million. The order includes Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar, associated command and control systems and integration to a Swedish GBAD solution. The Swedish GBAD consists of a Giraffe 1X radar and the RBS 70 NG remote weapon station connected with the GBAD C2 air defense command and control solution. The radar will be installed on a Sisu GTP armoured vehicle. Giraffe 1X provides commanders with quality air defence target data, drone detection for counter-UAS, and sense and warn capability simultaneously for rockets, artillery and mortars.

“I am proud that Sweden chooses to integrate our versatile surface radar Giraffe 1X as a part of its ground based air defence. Our solution will contribute to strengthening Sweden’s ground based air defence capability and to protecting the forces with advanced capability to detect and identify threats while on the battlefield,” says Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.

Saab Giraffe 1X is intended primarily as a highly mobile radar that can work with very short-range air defence systems in the battlefield or at sea. Weighing less than 300 kg (660 lb), Giraffe 1X can be mounted on a small vehicle or vessel or in fixed installations such as on a building or a mast. The radar has a sense-and-warn function and can be optionally configured for weapon location. Giraffe 1X also offers continuous software upgrades in order to meet emerging threats. The Saab (formerly Ericsson Microwave Systems AB) Giraffe Radar is a family of land and naval two- or three-dimensional G/H-band (4 to 8 GHz) passive electronically scanned array radar-based surveillance and air defense command and control systems.

The Sisu GTP is a Finnish made four-wheeled, modular mine-resistant ambush protected armoured personnel carrier (APC) designed and built by Sisu Auto. The vehicle has a chassis base with mission modules that can be changed. It uses Texelis T700 axles with independent suspensions. Through the framework agreement between Finland and Sweden for defence cooperation, over 260 vehicles are planned to be produced. It includes troop transport variants, air-defence, command and control, medical care, single cab transport variants and CBRN reconnaissance. A small unknown number ordered as CBRN reconnaissance and indication vehicle, more likely to come. It is designed as Tgb24 in the Swedish Army. The first delivery took place in August 2024.
