The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Government of Tunisia involving 65’ SAFE Archangel boats, along with essential logistics and program support, for an estimated total cost of $110 million. This sale, which aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives, aims to bolster the maritime capabilities of Tunisia, a key non-NATO ally playing a crucial role in regional security and peacekeeping operations across Africa. Tunisia’s request includes additional non-Major Defense Equipment (MDE) SAFE Archangel boats and supplementary non-MDE articles and services. These additions will build upon a previously implemented FMS case valued at $49.3 million, which already included non-MDE SAFE Archangel boats and associated services. These services encompass commercial marine global positioning systems, navigation systems, communications equipment, training, and other logistical and program support elements. SAFE Boats International, based in Bremerton, Washington, will serve as the principal contractor for this project.

The SAFE Archangel boats are critical assets for the Tunisian Navy, which utilizes them for search and rescue missions, maritime law enforcement, and other maritime operations essential to maintaining security both within Tunisia and the broader region. The boats’ capabilities will significantly enhance Tunisia’s existing military strength, ensuring they remain well-equipped to meet shared security goals and promote regional stability. Additionally, the boats will improve interoperability between Tunisia, the United States, and Western partners. The SAFE Full Cabin – Inboard model, a diesel jet boat, has been specifically designed to perform well in both calm and challenging sea conditions. The boat features a wide beam design that ensures solid performance in heavy seas and a spacious, climate-controlled cabin to enhance crew safety and comfort. The Full Cabin – Inboard model is also highly versatile, capable of conducting patrols and search and rescue operations in offshore and big surf conditions, as well as in calmer, shallower seas.

The 65′ SAFE Archangel Boats are engineered for high-performance maritime operations, offering a blend of speed, range, and durability. Measuring 66 feet 6 inches (20.3 meters) in overall length, these vessels can reach top speeds of 36 knots and maintain a cruising speed of 28 knots, covering up to 350 nautical miles. They are equipped with a substantial fuel capacity of 2,000 gallons (7,571 liters), ensuring long operational endurance. The boats have a beam overall of 16 feet 5 inches (5 meters) and a deadrise at the transom of 22 degrees, enhancing stability in rough waters. With a maximum horsepower of 3,200 (2,386 kW), these boats are capable of carrying up to 25,000 pounds (11,340 kilograms) of payload. The light ship weight stands at 68,000 pounds (30.1 metric tons), increasing to 86,000 pounds (39 metric tons) when service-ready, and reaching a full capacity load of 93,000 pounds (42 metric tons). At full capacity, the draft measures 3 feet 6 inches (1.06 meters), with the capability to exceed speeds of 42 knots at half capacity. Additionally, they are designed with 100 gallons (379 liters) of potable water storage and 50 gallons (189 liters) each for grey and black water, making them self-sufficient for extended missions.
