The MILDEF Tarantula 4×4 High Mobility Armoured Vehicle (HMAV), developed by MILDEF Technologies Sdn. Bhd., has successfully passed multiple tests, with the Malaysian Army concluding that the vehicle meets all required technical specifications. This was confirmed by the Malaysian Minister of Defense in a recent parliamentary session. The Tarantula HMAV, a product of local defense technology, underwent a series of evaluations to ensure it meets the needs of the Malaysian Armed Forces (TDM). Among the key tests conducted were the Capability Evaluation Test, carried out in Malaysia’s diverse operational environments in early 2021, and an assessment of MILDEF’s manufacturing capabilities in February 2023.

In addition, two crucial ballistic tests were performed. The first, a live fire ballistic test, took place at the Defence Technology Institute in Bangkok, Thailand, while the second, an explosion and mine/underbelly test, was conducted at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria, South Africa. While the vehicle has shown promising results, it is still too early to confirm whether the Tarantula 4×4 will be incorporated into the Malaysian Army’s fleet. Currently, the procurement process for High Mobility Reconnaissance Vehicles (HMRV) is underway, with the tender expected to close in November 2024. The Tarantula 4×4, being one of the local contenders, could provide a significant boost to Malaysia’s defense industry, which is steadily growing its capability to produce military assets domestically.

MILDEF has been actively promoting the Tarantula on the international stage, showcasing it at regional defense exhibitions. First launched on April 2, 2021, by the then-Defense Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri, at the Kem Perdana Sungai Besi, the vehicle has garnered significant attention both locally and internationally. The Tarantula HMAV, a 14-ton, mine-resistant infantry mobility vehicle, offers high-level protection against various battlefield threats, including mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The vehicle is powered by a 7.2-liter Caterpillar turbocharged diesel engine, delivering 330 horsepower and a top speed of 110 km/h. It features STANAG 4569 Level 2 ballistic protection and is equipped with a 12.7mm Remote-Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) and smoke grenade dischargers for added defense.

The vehicle was designed with 70% local content, further reducing Malaysia’s reliance on foreign-made armored vehicles. Its development represents a strategic move towards strengthening the nation’s defense capabilities. As the Malaysian Army evaluates its next-generation military vehicles, the Tarantula 4×4 remains a strong contender. Its adoption would signify a major milestone in the country’s defense innovation and self-reliance in military technology. According to the Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, some unnamed Middle Eastern countries have expressed interest in acquiring the Tarantula.[7] Mildef has said that they are looking to export the Tarantula to ASEAN member countries, followed by countries outside the region.
