Saab Delivers Second Saab 340 AEW Aircraft to Polish Air Force

Polish Air Force has received the second Saab 340AEW aircraft from Sweden, completing a key contract aimed at enhancing early warning and command functions. The Polish Armament Agency announced this milestone, marking the fulfillment of a contract signed in July 2023. Valued at approximately EUR 52 million, this deal underscores Poland’s commitment to modernizing its defense infrastructure amidst evolving regional security dynamics. The Saab 340AEW aircraft, a Swedish airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform, is a pivotal addition to Poland’s defense arsenal. These aircraft are designed to provide advanced surveillance capabilities, crucial for early detection and tracking of potential threats. The Saab 340AEW is equipped with the PS-890 AESA radar system, part of the Erieye family. This radar system is renowned for its ability to track multiple targets, including ships, planes, and missiles, at ranges of up to 250 miles (400 kilometers). Operating at an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters), the radar can effectively scan a 120-degree arc on either side of the aircraft, although it has a limited coverage zone directly behind and in front of the plane. The introduction of the Saab 340AEW aircraft is expected to play a crucial role in Poland’s national defense strategy over the next decade. These aircraft are projected to remain operational for about ten years, during which Poland plans to procure new aircraft of a similar class.
