The German defense procurement agency (BAAINBw, Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr) recently finalized a framework agreement with Quantum Systems to supply Vector electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) for the German Special Operations Forces (SOF). This collaboration, part of the FALKE program, underscores the commitment to equipping SOF with state-of-the-art technology. The Vector drones promise to revolutionize the capabilities of the German military, providing them with versatile and powerful reconnaissance systems. This article explores the key features and implications of this strategic partnership. The centerpiece of this agreement is the acquisition of 14 Vector reconnaissance systems, specially designed and manufactured by Quantum Systems. These drones are slated for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2024, signaling the rapid integration of advanced technology into the German military’s operational capabilities.

Vector drones are distinguished by their Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capabilities, enabling them to navigate confined spaces with ease. Designed to withstand challenging environmental conditions, including strong winds, high temperatures, dust, and rainfall, these drones offer an impressive operational endurance of up to 180 minutes. Maintaining an intelligent cruise speed control ranging from 15 to 20 meters per second, Vector ensures swift and efficient mission execution. Furthermore, Vector’s real-time video feeds can be seamlessly transmitted to multiple Ground Control Stations through Mesh IP encrypted data links, with a remarkable range of 35 kilometers. This range can be further extended by incorporating additional data links, making it ideal for both short and long-distance reconnaissance missions. The minimal noise emissions of the Vector drone make it well-suited for discreet surveillance operations, adding an extra layer of advantage for SOF missions.

One of the key strengths of the Vector drone lies in its integrated gimbaled sensors, namely the HD40-LV and the Raptor. The HD40-LV, developed by Trillium Engineering, combines a unique Magnesium structure with cutting-edge optical zoom cameras. This gimbal boasts an EO/IR configuration, featuring a 10x optical zoom visible camera and a fixed focal length uncooled LWIR camera. This combination ensures that the Vector drone can capture highly detailed and high-quality images and video footage even in challenging conditions. The Vector drone’s remarkable versatility is further evident in its rapid deployment capabilities. It can be mission-ready within three minutes, requiring no tools for assembly or sensor replacement. Coupled with the QBase Tactical mission planning and monitoring software, Vector executes missions with a high degree of automation. Its autopilot consistently makes critical decisions reliably and independently. Additionally, Vector’s intelligent batteries optimize operational performance and safety across all missions, ensuring that SOF operators can rely on these drones in critical situations.
