Hungary to Purchase Israeli ELM-2084 3D AESA Multi-mission Radars

292

On December 11, 2020 the Hungarian government announced they have ordered multiple ELM-2084 radar systems of ELM-2084 radar systems made by the Israeli company ELTA, a subsidiary of IAI with Rheinmetall’s Canadian subsidiary. The new systems will replace old air defense radars that have been in service since Soviet times like the P-37, PRV-17 and ST-68U. The number of radars to be purchased is unknown, but the deal is expected to be larger than the one with the Czech Republic in 2018, in which eight radars worth $125 million were purchased. Several versions of the radar were purchased and are operated by a number of armies, including the Israel Defense Forces, Canadian Army, Republic of Singapore Air Force, and the Army of the Czech Republic. Delivery of the radars will begin in 2022 through Rheinmetall Canada.

The ELM-2084 is an Israeli ground-based mobile 3D AESA multi-mission radar (MMR) family produced by ELTA, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries. The radar is capable of detecting and tracking both aircraft and ballistic targets and providing fire control guidance for missile interception or artillery air defense. As a tactical radar, the ELM 2084 is a mobile system consisted of the radar unit, a control module, a cooling unit and a power generator. It can be mounted on a variety of transport platforms. The radar was designed to accommodate medium range operational needs in the battlefield: detection, classification and tracking of targets. The first successful interception using the MMR as a firing control unit took place on April 7, 2011, with the Iron Dome intercepting a rocket fired from the Gaza strip towards Ashkelon, a city in southern Israel.

ELTA’s ELM-2084 is a mobile S-Band Multi-Mission Radar (MMR) family featuring an advanced 3D Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) for Air Defense (AD) and Artillery Weapon Location (WLR) missions. In the AD mode, the radar detects and classifies all types of airborne targets and generates a real-time Air Situation Picture (ASP). The WLR mode detects incoming mortars, artillery shells, and missiles and informs hostile weapon firing location as well as real-time calculation of impact point and friendly fire ranging. In addition, the Fire Control Radar (FCR) functionality enables control via uplink to anti-missile interception systems and Surface-to-Air (SAM) missile systems. The operational and combat proven MMR provides air defense capabilities to customers around the world as well as being the radar of “Iron Dome”, “David’s Sling” and IAI’s land-based “Barak” weapon systems.
