The U.S. Army awarded BAE Systems two contract modifications worth up to $575 million for the low-rate initial production of the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV). These awards mark the beginning of low-rate production for the highly mobile, survivable, multipurpose vehicle designed to meet the mission of the U.S. Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCT). Previously awarded funding to support production planning, combined with the $128 million January 2019 award allowed BAE Systems to start production. A second award in February 2019 for $447 million brings the total LRIP funding so far to $873 million.

The AMPV is the U.S. Army’s program to replace the Vietnam War-era and legacy M113 Family of Vehicles. The program is essential to the future of the Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) and will fulfill the Army’s strategy of protection, mobility, reliability, and interoperability. BAE Systems, the AMPV equipment manufacturer, has modernized the AMPV production line in their York, PA facility and is on contract to deliver the first 457 of 2,897 AMPVs, with initial vehicle delivery in the summer of 2020. A robotic weld cell and improved welding machines are two of the improved measures that have been integrated into the AMPV production line.
