General Dynamics NASSCO wins $91 million for USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) dry-docking

General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., (NASSCO)-Norfolk has received a $91,4 million as a modification to a previously awarded contract for modifications and maintenance of aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the U.S. Defense Department announced. A Dry-docking Planned Incremental Availability includes the planning and execution of depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications that will update and improve the ship’s military and technical capabilities, the US Department of Defense said in a statement Monday.

Per the deal, General Dynamics will execute planning and depot-level maintenance, alterations, and modifications to upgrade and improve the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) military and technical capabilities. Work related to the deal will be performed in Portsmouth, VA and is expected to get completed by February 2021. The undefinitized contract action is a modification to a previously awarded contract, as announced by the US defense department. The company will utilize fiscal 2019 operations and maintenance (Navy) funds to finish the task.

USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy. She is named for the 41st President of the United States and former Director of Central Intelligence George H. W. Bush, who was a naval aviator during World War II. Bush’s callsign is Avenger, after the TBM Avenger aircraft flown by then-Lieutenant George H.W. Bush in World War II. Construction began in 2003 at the Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard’s Dry Dock 12, the largest in the western hemisphere. She was completed in 2009 at a cost of $6.2 billion and her home port is Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia.

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, commonly referred to as NASSCO, is an American shipbuilding company with three[1] shipyards located in San Diego, Norfolk, and Mayport. It focuses on designing and building supplementary and support ships for the U.S. Navy as well as oil tankers and dry cargo carriers for the commercial markets. NASSCO also specializes in conducting full-service maintenance and surface-ship repair operations for the Navy’s global force.
