KNDS France successfully demonstrated the CAESAR 8×8 self-propelled howitzer’s long-range precision at the Ustka firing range in Poland. During the trial, the CAESAR 8×8, equipped with a full range of KNDS artillery ammunition, fired a precision shot over a distance of 42 kilometers. This demonstration not only highlighted the system’s power but also showcased the potential of the Bonus 155mm artillery projectile, a smart round designed to defeat armored vehicles at long range. The successful demonstration of the CAESAR 8×8 and Bonus round in Poland could pave the way for a closer Franco-Polish defense partnership. As Poland seeks to modernize and expand its artillery capabilities, KNDS France is positioning itself as a key technological partner, offering advanced solutions to meet the growing demands of European defense.

The Bonus artillery round, co-developed by Sweden’s Bofors and France’s Nexter (now part of KNDS), is a sophisticated 155mm NATO-standard shell. What makes Bonus unique is its ability to deploy two autonomous, sensor-guided submunitions that can accurately target armored vehicles such as main battle tanks. As the submunitions descend from an altitude of 1,000 meters, they scan the battlefield with multi-frequency infrared sensors and LiDAR, comparing detected targets with a pre-programmed database. Once the correct target is identified, the submunitions attack using explosively formed penetrator (EFP) warheads capable of penetrating heavy armor. This “fire-and-forget” capability has been battle-proven in operations, including French forces’ engagements against the Islamic State in 2018.

Beyond the technological prowess on display, the trial also has strategic significance. KNDS France announced its interest in establishing industrial and technological cooperation with Poland in the field of artillery ammunition production. This potential partnership would involve joint efforts in the manufacturing of propellants, fuzes, and primers. Poland, which is looking to expand its defense manufacturing capacity, particularly in the production of 155mm artillery shells, is in need of foreign technology partners to enhance its domestic capabilities. Polish defense companies, while competent in other areas, have limited experience in producing the advanced artillery shells required for systems like the CAESAR.

The geopolitical landscape in Europe, particularly in the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, has heightened the importance of advanced artillery systems. NATO members, including France and Sweden, have provided military aid to Ukraine, with Bonus rounds being used effectively against Russian armored forces. Most notably, in July 2024, a Bonus shell was responsible for the destruction of a Russian T-90M main battle tank near Robotyne, underscoring the shell’s effectiveness in modern conflicts. This demonstration marks another step forward in the collaboration between NATO allies to strengthen their artillery forces, ensuring they remain capable of countering modern threats on the battlefield.
