Raytheon, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, has been awarded a $192 million contract from the U.S. Navy to develop the Next Generation Jammer Mid-Band Expansion (NGJ-MBX), an upgrade to the current Next Generation Jammer Mid-Band (NGJ-MB) system. This modification will extend the frequency range of the NGJ-MB system to counter additional threats. NGJ-MB, to include MBX, is a cooperative development and production program with the Royal Australian Air Force. MBX provides additional capabilities to improve operational effectiveness. It is an airborne electronic attack system consisting of two pods containing active electronically scanned arrays that radiate in the mid-band frequency range. Work under this contract will take place in Dallas; Forest, Michigan; El Segundo, California; and Fort Wayne, Indiana through 2027. The U.S. Navy employs NGJ-MB on the EA-18G GROWLER® to target advanced electronic warfare threats.

The U.S. Navy’s NGJ-MB is an advanced electronic attack system that denies, disrupts and degrades enemy technology, including communication tools and air-defense systems. The first flight took place August 7, 2020, at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, meeting all objectives. Future mission systems flight testing will demonstrate weapons system control, power generation, and electromagnetic compatibility between jammer and aircraft, as well as the performance of NGJ-MB’s high-capacity digital waveform generation and active electronically scanned arrays in flight against a variety of targets. Data from these flight tests on the Growler will inform Milestone C – the Navy’s decision to start NGJ-MB production.
