The U.S. State Department has greenlit a significant Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Israeli government, valued at an estimated $164.6 million. The deal centers on the Heavy Duty Tank Trailers (HDTT) along with accompanying equipment and logistics support. This sale represents a crucial enhancement to Israel’s military logistics, allowing the country to maintain and expand its self-defense capabilities in response to evolving security threats. This new transaction builds upon an earlier agreement under which Israel initially acquired HDTTs and related spare parts, repair kits, and technical support for $40.1 million. The original deal flew under the congressional notification threshold but has since grown in scope, reflecting Israel’s increasing defense needs as well as the strategic importance the U.S. places on its partnership with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The Heavy Duty Tank Trailer is a robust, highly specialized vehicle designed to transport heavy armored assets, including Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) and other large military vehicles. The HDTT is prized for its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and exceptional durability, particularly in the face of harsh battlefield conditions. With a payload capacity of up to 77 metric tons and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 96,000 kg, these trailers are engineered for high-performance logistics operations, ensuring the rapid and secure movement of Israel’s heaviest military equipment. This design is particularly notable for its two-axle system, which stands in contrast to the multi-axle configurations commonly found in similar transporters. The HDTT reduces both the complexity and the costs associated with maintenance, making it easier to keep the vehicles operational in demanding environments.

One of the standout features of the HDTT is its modular design, which can be tailored to the specific needs of different users. The total length reaches up to 14,150 mm, with a load length of 8,400 mm and a width of 3,750 mm, offering ample space for large military vehicles. The HDTT is also equipped with advanced safety and operational features. These include pneumatic braking systems, enhanced by an Electronic Braking System (EBS) for improved control and stability, and optional hydraulic rear stabilizers for added security during loading and unloading operations. Central tire inflation systems are also available, ensuring the trailer can adapt to different terrains and maintain optimal tire pressure. The HDTT supports axle loads of up to 16,800 kg per axle, ensuring it can bear the weight of heavy military vehicles without sacrificing safety or performance. The inclusion of 16 tires, two-speed mechanical landing gear, and spare tire brackets further enhance the trailer’s operational readiness.

The HDTTs are to be manufactured by Leonardo DRS, a premier defense contractor based in Arlington, Virginia. Leonardo DRS is renowned for its expertise in producing integrated military systems and has a long-standing history of supporting both U.S. and allied forces. The company’s Land Systems division will spearhead the production of 60 HDTTs under the contract, with work being carried out at its facility in West Plains, Missouri. Leonardo DRS’s Land Systems unit is no stranger to complex military projects. It has produced a wide range of advanced systems, including the Joint Assault Bridge and aircraft cargo loaders, in addition to its experience with heavy-duty trailers and fluid distribution systems. The company’s technical expertise and manufacturing capabilities ensure that the HDTTs will meet the stringent demands of military logistics operations, providing the IDF with reliable, high-quality equipment.
