On August 12, 2024, the Indonesian Air Force’s Kopasgat (Komando Pasukan Gerak Cepat, also known as the Quick Reaction Forces Command) officially received new tactical vehicles at their base. The ceremony, held at the 463rd Kopasgat Battalion’s transport shelter, marked the addition of three P2 TIGER and two P6 ATAV vehicles to their arsenal. The 463rd Kopasgat Battalion, renowned for its role in airfield security, airborne operations, and specialized military tasks, welcomed these new additions with a focus on maintaining operational readiness. The Battalion Commander emphasized the importance of regular maintenance and readiness of these vehicles, ensuring they are always prepared to support the unit’s future missions. Previously the concept of Kopasgat duty was as air force base defense troops (Defensive) only, but then it was further developed to be combined offensive and defensive troops force as the main Air Force infantry corps that can be deployed for assault and airborne operations.
The P6 ATAV, an Indonesian-made Light Attack Vehicle produced by PT Sentra Surya Ekayaja (SSE Defence), was first unveiled at Indo Defence 2016. It features three weapon mounting points for 7.62 mm machine guns, with potential upgrades for anti-tank missiles, surface-to-air missiles, and miniguns. The P6 ATAV offers light armor protection with aluminum plating, prioritizing agility and speed. Measuring 4.6 meters in length, 2.3 meters in width, and 1.5 meters in height, it is powered by a 142 HP 2.3-liter turbo diesel engine. The vehicle’s independent suspension and off-road winch enhance its off-road capabilities. Despite its light armor, the P6 ATAV is equipped with run-flat tires and an automatic transmission. With a full tank, it can travel up to 500 km and reach speeds of 120 km/h. The P6 ATAV V3 variant provides additional protection with STANAG level 1 armor, bullet-proof glass, and run-flat tires. It can be transported by C-130 Hercules aircraft and features the Reutech RCWS with either 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm guns, along with the Metravib PILAR gunshot detection system.
The P2 TIGER 4×4, also produced by PT Sentra Surya Ekajaya, represents the latest in local armored vehicle technology. Notably, it utilizes a chassis from the Kamaz 4×4, a Russian design, though there are rumors that future models may incorporate components from the French Celeris 4×4, following a recent partnership announcement between Texelis and PT SSE. Introduced to the Batalyon Komando arsenal in 2023, the P2 TIGER is designed for attack, reconnaissance, long-range patrols, and VVIP protection missions. The P2 TIGER is equipped with STANAG 4569 level 1 protection, which shields against 5.56 and 7.62 mm NATO projectiles. Its armor also extends to the windows, ensuring comprehensive protection. Additionally, the vehicle features a gunfire locator on the rear, which aids in detecting the direction and distance of enemy fire, significantly enhancing its operational effectiveness in combat situations.
