On July 24, 2024, the Uruguayan Army received a substantial boost to its peacekeeping capabilities with the donation of 13 Osprea Mamba Mk7 Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles from the United States. Valued at approximately $13 million, this donation underscores the ongoing defense cooperation between the two nations. The delivery ceremony, held at the Service of Material and Armament, was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay Heide Fulton, Uruguay’s Minister of National Defense Javier García, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Uruguayan Army. Over the decades, the Uruguayan Armed Forces have received a variety of military equipment from the U.S., including M101 and M114A2 howitzers, M1 mortars, and anti-tank weapons such as the M40A1 recoilless rifles and MILAN anti-tank missiles.

The Mamba is a South African armoured personnel carrier designed for internal security purposes. It was developed during the late 1980s to replace the Buffel in service with the South African military and security forces. The first models were built on a 4X2 Toyota Dyna chassis, which was subsequently replaced in production around 1994 by a more reliable Unimog chassis. All marks of the Mamba were designed to be mine-resistant and blastproof. Originating in South Africa during the late 1980s, the Mamba series was initially developed to replace the Buffel vehicle in military and security operations. Thousands of Mamba vehicles have been built, and most are still in service in military, policing and peacekeeping operations, across Africa and the world, and spawning many variants in extensive use by US and NATO forces, such as the RG-31, RG-32 and RG-33.

The Mamba Mk7 represents the latest evolution in the Mamba series of MRAP vehicles, designed by Osprea Logistics to offer superior ballistic and mine-blast protection in high-threat environments. Equipped with a Deutz BF6L914C Turbo engine generating 203 HP and an Allison 2500SP automatic transmission, the Mamba Mk7 excels in mobility across diverse terrains. The latest version of the legendary Mamba armored vehicle – the Mamba Mk7 – builds on the proven success of Osprea’s previous Mambas, the Mk5 and Mk5 Iveco, and now provides even higher degrees of ballistic and mine-blast protection, excellent mobility and more maneuverability than ever before. Its versatile design allows for various configurations, including troop transport, command roles, and medical evacuation. Additional options would add Ground Penetrating Radar to the EOD or IA vehicle.

The Mamba has a documented and enviable in-service record for user- friendliness, safety, performance reliability and ease of logistics support. Sound in its ballistic and ergonomic design, having saved numerous lives in IED attacks in kinetic African Peace Keeping Operations, it remains the preferred choice in medium-sized wheeled armored vehicles. The Mamba Mk7 retains the legendary design and performance capabilities of the Mamba pedigree, enhanced by the latest improvements from leading US OEM’s, and further developed with multiple configurations on the base-platform. As the owner of the Mamba brand, only Osprea Logistics produces new Mamba Mk7 vehicles. The Mamba has been widely utilized in peacekeeping and military roles in countries such as Somalia, Kenya, and Uganda, renowned for its simplicity, reliability, and ease of maintenance.
