Following the modernization of several M113 vehicles already delivered by the Belgian Ministry of Defense to the Ukrainian army to help it in its conflict with Russia, John Cockerill has been asked to adapt and supply BV-206 tracked articulated, all-terrain carrier vehicles. The modernizations involve the engine and other associated mechanical aspects, as well as the interior configuration. These BV-206s will be adapted and optimized to be transformed into medical vehicles, equipped with medical kits and upgraded engines. The BV-206 is already in use in Ukraine, and recognized for its high mobility in complicated field of operation. These characteristics make the BV-206 ideally suited to evacuation missions for wounded soldiers. The project calls for expertise in the maintenance, repair and operation of military vehicles, which the teams at John Cockerill Defense in Aubange (Belgium) have acquired in a wide range of military programs. As with the M113 tracked armored personnel carrier, John Cockerill is proud to be able to contribute to the efforts of Belgium and other partner countries to support Ukraine.
Bandvagn 206 (Bv 206) (meaning “Tracked Vehicle 206” in English) is a tracked articulated, all-terrain carrier initially developed and manufactured by the Swedish company Hägglund & Söner, and subsequently by BAE Systems Hägglunds, for the Swedish Army. It consists of two units, with all four tracks powered. It can carry up to 17 people, 6 in the front compartment, 11 in the rear. The trailer unit can be adapted for different uses. The first production examples were delivered to the Swedish Defence Administration in 1980. In 2004, Hägglunds became part of BAE Systems, with the business becoming BAE Systems Hägglunds.
The Bandvagn powered by a 2.8L Ford Cologne V6 engine generating 99 kW. Its MB W 4A-018 automatic transmission enhances operational efficiency, making it suitable for both military and civilian applications. Weighing 4,500 kilograms (9,900 lb), the Bv 206 can transport substantial cargo loads of up to 2,240 kilograms (4,940 lb), with 630 kilograms (1,390 lb) allocated to the front unit and 1,610 kilograms (3,550 lb) to the trailer unit. Measuring 6.9 meters in length, 1.87 meters in width, and 2.4 meters in height, the Bv 206 is designed for maneuverability and stability, providing a dependable solution for transporting personnel and equipment in challenging terrains.
