Slovak defense company EVPÚ has unveiled the latest variant of its Turra 30 turret, the Turra 30-SA, at the International Defense Exhibition Bratislava (IDEB) 2024, held from May 14 to 16. This new remotely operated turret, developed in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) Elta Systems, represents a significant advancement in armored vehicle weaponry and defense technology. The Turra 30-SA is specifically designed for integration into both tracked and light wheeled armored combat vehicles. One of its standout features is the inclusion of the IAI Elta Systems Othello optical threat locator, a sophisticated sensor capable of detecting and tracking optical threats.
The remotely operated turret has a complete armament that includes a 30 mm automatic cannon of the MK-44S Bushmaster II or GTS-30/A type. the Turra 30-SA can fire programmable airburst munitions, providing effective countermeasures against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This capability addresses a growing need on the modern battlefield, where UAV threats are increasingly prevalent. Complementing the main cannon, the turret boasts a 7.62 mm machine gun of the FN MAG or PKT type, a SPIKE LR/LR-2 anti-tank guided missile launcher housed in a protective box casing with a moveable front cover, and two banks of (GALIX or HOLE) grenade launchers on either side of the turret.
Further enhancing its defensive capabilities, the Turra 30-SA includes a radar system and the ThunderBullet ELO-5220P optical and acoustic gunfire detection system. This addition enhances the turret’s situational awareness and threat response capabilities. These systems work in tandem to detect and neutralize incoming threats, providing comprehensive protection for the vehicle and its occupants. The turret’s design adheres to the NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) Level 3 ballistic protection standards, ensuring a high level of defense against small arms fire and shell splinters. EVPÚ has also indicated that the Turra 30-SA can be equipped with an active protection system (APS), which would add another layer of defense against incoming projectiles and missiles.
