Piaggio Aerospace, one of the leading players in the international aerospace industry, has recently been certified as Maintenance Training Organisation by the Italian Ministry of Defence. The certification was assigned by the Italian Secretariat General of Defence/National Armaments Directorate through the Directorate for Air Armaments and Airworthiness and allows the Italian Company to train maintenance personnel on the military configurations of its flagship aircraft, the P.180. In compliance with the European Defence Agency’s regulations EMAR 147, Piaggio Aerospace will provide training courses valid for obtaining the Military Aircraft Maintenance Licence.

This is a step that further consolidates Piaggio Aerospace’s strategic role within the Defence industry. For many years, the Company has been maintaining several kinds of aero engines (e. g. the Viper in use by the Italian National Aerobatic Team) and has been designing, developing and supporting unmanned aerial systems, air ambulances and special-mission aircraft, with proven specific technical expertise.

Piaggio Aerospace has successfully completed the retrofit of a first P.180 operated by the Italian Air Force: technicians and engineers upgraded, certified and delivered a P.180 Avanti I - the first release of the aircraft – carrying now a new configuration called Avanti II+, based on the latest aeronautical technologies.

“Being certified for military aircraft training represents another acknowledgement of the Company’s know-how by the Italian Armed Forces. and gives us the chance to support the standardisation of military airworthiness within the European Union”, said Mrs Manuela Ramella, Chief Technical Officer and Quality Manager at Piaggio Aerospace.

Piaggio Aerospace, formerly Piaggio Aero Industries, is a multinational aerospace manufacturing company headquartered in Villanova d’Albenga, Italy. Established in 1884 as Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A., it shares its ancestry with motor vehicle manufacturer Piaggio and is one of the world’s oldest aircraft manufacturers, having produced its first aircraft during 1915. During 1966, the business was separated into the aviation-focused Piaggio Aero and the motor scooter manufacturer Vespa. During the 1980s, Piaggio developed a new generation business aircraft, the P.180 Avanti.
