Indonesia has recently signed a significant contract with state-owned aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) for the procurement of three CN235-220 transport aircraft. The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (MoD) sealed the USD85 million deal on November 30, 2023, solidifying the nation’s commitment to bolstering its aerial fleet. The CN235-220 aircraft will be delivered to the Indonesian Army’s Aviation Centre in a troop transport configuration. This specific layout allows the aircraft to accommodate 49 fully equipped soldiers or up to 34 paratroopers for specialized airborne insertion operations. Notably, the local industrial content for the manufacturing of the CN235-220 stands at an impressive 38.74 percent, underscoring Indonesia’s dedication to fostering domestic aerospace capabilities.
The CN235, a medium-range twin-engined transport aircraft jointly developed by CASA (now Airbus) and Indonesian manufacturer IPTN (now PTDI), holds strategic importance for Indonesia. Seeking greater autonomy in the manufacturing process, the country has positioned this objective as part of the offset conditions for potential procurement of the Airbus A400M Atlas strategic transport aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force. The CN235-220 represents an improved version, with structural reinforcements catering to higher operating weights, aerodynamic enhancements, and reduced field length requirements. Its increased range with maximum payload, reaching about 414 nautical miles, further highlights its operational prowess. Operating as both a regional airliner and military transport, the CN235-220 serves various roles, including air transport and aerial surveillance.
Apart from its troop transport capabilities, the aircraft’s adaptability shines through in its ability to quickly transform for other missions. The lateral seats in the cabin can be raised to facilitate cargo transportation or swiftly reconfigured to accommodate up to 18 stretchers for medical evacuation and disaster relief missions. Scheduled for delivery in 2026, the first airframe under the new contract signifies Indonesia’s commitment to maintaining a modern and capable aerial fleet. With a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 16,500 kg and the capacity to carry payloads of up to 5,200 kg, the CN235-220 stands as a testament to Indonesia’s strategic investment in cutting-edge military aviation technology. Powered by two General Electric CT7-9C engines, the aircraft boasts a maximum speed of 237 knots and an economical cruise speed of 169 knots, ensuring both agility and efficiency in fulfilling its multifaceted roles.
