Italian vehicle manufacturer Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) has successfully delivered the inaugural batch of Military Utility Vehicles (MUVs) to the Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer). These vehicles, based on the militarized version of the Iveco Daily 70.20, signify Austria’s strategic move to modernize its aging fleet of Pinzgauer trucks, which have faithfully served since the 1970s. IDV, in collaboration with Austrian company EMPL, has begun the integration of specialized equipment into these MUVs. With an initial procurement of 125 vehicles across two phases in 2020 and 2023, Austria has invested 42.5 million EUR in this endeavor. The comprehensive delivery is slated for completion by 2026.

Described by Iveco as robust and highly mobile, the MUVs boast versatility across diverse terrains and climates. Leveraging Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components ensures optimal performance, reliability, and ergonomic design, while simultaneously streamlining logistical operations. Integral to Austria’s military modernization efforts is the incorporation of these MUVs into the Tactical Communication Network (TCN). Equipped with advanced radio and communication technology, including tactical routers, servers, switches, and 6kVA power generators, the vehicles facilitate seamless off-road communication for real-time information transmission and command coordination.
