Janes reported that the newly designed 120 mm mortar variant integrated into the Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) promises to redefine combat strategy. The journey to this milestone began with BAE Systems’ delivery of the prototype for Patria’s 120 mm New Mortar (NEMO) and Kongsberg turret program in January 2024. Despite the ambitious nature of the project, the prototype remains firmly on schedule for its first delivery. The Army is poised to showcase its prowess through a live-fire demonstration at the upcoming conference, a testament to the progress achieved.
The XM1287 Mortar Carrier Vehicle (MCV) steps in to replace the M1064A3 Mortar Carrier, boasting a configuration designed to accommodate 2 crew members and 2 mortar crew, housing a 120 mm mortar along with 69 mortar rounds. Its primary objective revolves around providing crucial indirect mortar fire support. With 386 units planned, it stands as a testament to the Army’s commitment to modernizing its capabilities. The XM1286 Mission Command (MCmd) variant, a successor to the M1068A3 Command Post Carrier, is set to be a beacon of efficiency. With provisions for 2 crew members, 2 operators, and a mounting position for a crew-served weapon, its primary function revolves around establishing a robust command post. The plan is to deploy 993 units, ensuring operational superiority.
