In a historic moment that signifies progress and growth for EXCALIBUR ARMY spol. s r.o (EA), the BMP-1 memorial that has graced the company’s premises in Šternberk for four decades was removed on the 6th of October 2023. This move was made to create space for a state-of-the-art production hall, with plans to complete its construction by the end of 2024. To truly appreciate this milestone, we must journey back to the 1980s when VOP-026, the predecessor to EA, underwent a significant shift in its business focus. Beyond its renowned expertise in repairing infantry fighting vehicles, the company embarked on a journey of growth and modernization. It was during this transformative period that the decision was made to install a modern military vehicle, symbolizing the dawn of a new era.
In 1983, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the repair plant, the BMP-1 (Boyevaya Mashina Pyekhoty 1) amphibious tracked infantry fighting vehicle was carefully positioned in front of the main building with the help of a crane. The installation ceremony was a significant event attended by Colonel Jaromír Macha?, Deputy Chief of the 026 Repair Plant, representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the Soviet Army Command in Olomouc, and the town of Šternberk. This BMP-1, previously retired from service due to excessive use, was specially renovated for its new role. Key modifications included deactivating the cannon and removing the drive unit. The vehicle was then mounted on a pedestal, serving as a symbol and monument for the company.
Over the ensuing decades, the BMP-1 witnessed the remarkable growth and development of the company, including the renaming to VOP-026 Šternberk, s.p., modernizing existing facilities, renovating the reception area with a new entrance, constructing assembly hall B80, and the establishment of the EA R&D center. This monument represented the unwavering dedication and expertise of the company in repairing and renovating military vehicles—a tradition that continues today at the Šternberk facility.
