The first Homar-K Multiple Rocket Launcher (MRL) has officially arrived in the country. Manufactured by the South Korean defense company Hanwha Aerospace, this event marks the initiation of the delivery process for the 218 launchers that were contracted by Poland in the preceding year. The Homar-K system, a remarkable amalgamation of the improved K239 launcher and the robust Jelcz P882 8×8 truck chassis, has been meticulously crafted to cater to Poland’s evolving military requirements. The Homar-K (Lobster-K) exemplifies the spirit of international collaboration, bringing together South Korean expertise and Polish aspirations for a state-of-the-art multiple launch rocket system. The system boasts several notable features that make it a formidable addition to Poland’s military arsenal. It is set to integrate the advanced Polish-designed TOPAZ Combat Management System, enhancing operational efficiency and strategic coordination.

The foundation of the Homar-K system can be traced back to the K239 Chunmoo rocket artillery system, which was developed in 2013 by South Korea to replace its aging K136 Kooryong. The K239 Chunmoo boasts impressive versatility, capable of launching a variety of guided or unguided artillery rockets. The launcher is equipped to carry different types of rockets, including the K33 131 mm unguided rockets, the KM26A2 230 mm rockets, and the 239 mm guided rockets with high explosive penetration warheads or cluster bombs. These include the South Korean 239 mm guided rocket, produced in Poland under license, and the CTM290 (Chunmoo Tactical Missile), a 600 mm short-range tactical ballistic missile. With a remarkable range of 290 km, the CTM290 is engineered to strike targets with precision, penetrating bunkers and hardened structures, further fortifying Poland’s defense capabilities.

The journey towards acquiring the Homar-K system has been characterized by meticulous planning and cooperation between Poland and South Korea. Negotiations began in 2022, culminating in a successful agreement to acquireK239 Chunmoo systems. Poland’s decision to opt for the Homar-K system over the initially intended American M142 HIMARS launchers underscores its commitment to securing modern and efficient defense capabilities within a realistic timeline. The signing of the supply contract for 288 Chunmoo MLRS along with 23 thousand missiles, signifies a significant step forward for Poland’s national security. With this new addition, Poland is well-poised to navigate the complex landscape of modern defense challenges and safeguard its national sovereignty effectively. The future holds great promise as Poland continues to invest in cutting-edge technology and forge strong alliances in the realm of defense.
