On August 14th, the Polish Armament Agency (Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa, PGZ SA) finalized a substantial € 270 million contract, sealing a collaboration with a consortium formed by the Polish Armament Group and Rosomak. This significant deal entails the procurement of “several hundreds” of light reconnaissance vehicles, all based on the South Korean Kia Motors KLTV (Kia Light Tactical Vehicle) Raycolt Reconnaissance Vehicle. In a strategic move, this agreement also paves the way for a robust industry partnership between Kia Motors and Polish defense firms. The primary objective of this collaboration is to establish capabilities for licensed production, maintenance, servicing, and repairs of these vehicles within Poland’s borders.

The focal point of this defense initiative is the utilization of the latest iteration of the Kia Motors KLTV Raycolt 4×4, a light off-road vehicle that has been under development since 2013. Known as the Raycolt in Korean or the Kia Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV), this nimble utility vehicle entered full-scale production in 2016 and promptly became part of the Republic of Korea Army’s arsenal. Originating as a response to the specific requirements of the South Korean armed forces, the KLTV project received crucial support and funding from the South Korean Ministry of National Defense. It also aims to replace the existing fleet of Kia KM420 and KM450 utility vehicles in the South Korean military.

The KLTV sets itself apart by successfully combining mobility, survivability, and practicality within its design framework. This achievement stems from its adaptable basic chassis, which facilitates the creation of various derivative models. These encompass standard, long wheelbase, armored, and armed variants. The versatile 4-door variant accommodates a driver and up to three passengers, while a single-cab version provides an alternative configuration. One of the KLTV’s noteworthy features is its modular compartments, which are compatible with both single and double cab variants. The armored version boasts enhancements such as bullet-proof windshields and door glass, composite panels and doors, mine-protected flooring, blast-absorbing seats, and gunner protective armor.

The lineup offers both standard and armored iterations. The incorporation of Dyneema’s lightweight armor technology further contributes to the vehicle’s defense capabilities. Furthermore, the KLTV’s roof opening can be equipped with weapon mounts, including manually-operated canopy mounts or remote-controlled weapon systems. These mounts support a range of armament options, including 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine guns, 40mm automatic grenade launchers, and even anti-tank missiles. The KLTV also features a 10kW power generator, which can be integrated to supply power for Remote-Controlled Weapon Systems (RCWS) and other vital equipment such as communication radios, computers, specialized gear, and additional electric-operated optional components.
