In response to the evolving challenges posed by mountainous and high-altitude terrains, the Indian Army has taken a significant leap forward in enhancing its surveillance and transparency capabilities through the adoption of the SWATHI WLR mountain variant. Developed domestically by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru, this cutting-edge radar system represents a crucial addition to the Army’s artillery arsenal, tailored to effectively address the unique complexities of operations in such demanding environments. During a notable ceremony in Agra, Lieutenant General JB Chaudhari, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (CD&S), officiated the inclusion of the SWATHI WLR into the Indian Army’s equipment inventory.

The SWATHI WLR mountain variant represents an evolutionary step from its predecessor, a version that had already demonstrated exceptional performance while deployed along the Line of Control (LoC). With approximately 30 units of the initial WLR variant already operational within the Army, its track record instilled confidence in pursuing a more agile and compact iteration specifically tailored to the challenges posed by mountainous terrains. The Army’s demand for enhanced mobility and adaptability in these regions prompted the creation of the SWATHI Mountains variant. This successful development was achieved through a collaborative endeavor involving the Radar House Electronics, Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

The cooperation between these entities, including the premier laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), reflects a shared vision to address the long-standing requirement for a technologically advanced radar system optimized for mountain operations. The induction of the SWATHI Mountains variant marks a significant milestone for India’s defense sector, aptly showcasing the nation’s technological prowess and self-reliance in crafting sophisticated defense equipment. By embracing indigenous development and production, India underscores its dedication to diminishing reliance on foreign defense imports, thereby reinforcing its autonomous defense capabilities.

The SWATHI WLR stands equipped with a range of advanced features that empower it to accurately identify and track enemy artillery and mortar positions, thereby furnishing real-time intelligence to the Indian Army. Its capacity to function optimally at high altitudes and within the rugged terrain of mountains grants the Indian forces a strategic edge, heightening their situational awareness and capacity to respond effectively to evolving scenarios. In summation, the induction of the SWATHI WLR mountain variant is a testament to India’s commitment to advancing its defense capabilities and ensuring the security of its mountainous regions through innovative and indigenous solutions.
