Sikorsky Delivers S-92 Search and Rescue Helicopter to Korea Coast Guard

The Korea Coast Guard accepted the delivery on September 30 of its third S-92® search and rescue helicopter built by Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company. The expansion of Korea Coast Guard’s S-92 fleet increases its capability to conduct maritime security, safety and life-saving missions for the people of Korea. The Korea Coast Guard has completed 195 rescues and has flown more than 2,700 flight hours since 2014. The global fleet of S-92 helicopters recently achieved 2 million flight hours in a variety of missions including search and rescue, oil and gas transportation and VIP transportation in 28 countries.

“The S-92 gives the Korea Coast Guard a strategic advantage when it comes to saving lives. Every second counts, which is why the agile, all-weather S-92 is mission ready, all the time,” said Leon Silva, vice president of Sikorsky Global Commercial and Military Systems.

“Our valued partnership with Sikorsky spans for nearly a decade. We look forward to continued success as we grow our fleet of highly-capable search and rescue S-92 aircraft,” said Mr. Han Sangchul, Senior Superintendent and Final Acceptance Test Inspection Team Lead for the Korea Coast Guard.

The Sikorsky S-92 is an American twin-engine medium-lift helicopter built by Sikorsky Aircraft for the civil and military helicopter markets. The S-92 was developed from the Sikorsky S-70 helicopter and has similar parts such as flight control and rotor systems. The H-92 Superhawk is a military version of the S-92 in the utility transport role, capable of carrying 22 troops. The H-92 can also be configured for specific missions, including search and rescue and executive transportation. In May 2014, Sikorsky was honored to win the U.S. Navy Contract to Replace ‘Marine One’ Helicopter Fleet and the vote of confidence in the S-92 as a proven and trusted platform.

Sikorsky is an American aircraft manufacturer based in Stratford, Connecticut. It was established by aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky in 1923 and was among the first companies to manufacture helicopters for civilian and military use. Previously owned by United Technologies Corporation, in November 2015 Sikorsky was sold to Lockheed Martin. Sikorsky’s main plant and administrative offices are located in Stratford, Connecticut, as is a large company-owned private heliport. Other Sikorsky facilities are in Trumbull, Shelton, and Bridgeport, Connecticut with small company heliport; Fort Worth, Texas; West Palm Beach, Florida; and Huntsville and Troy, Alabama.
