Saab has received new orders from FMV regarding submarine upgrades. The orders include a life-time extension of HMS Södermanland, as well as new batteries and battery development. The total order value is SEK 470 million. The life-time extension means that the submarine HMS Södermanland will receive around 50 modifications, prolonging and enhancing her operability for a further six years. The orders also include an exchange of batteries for the Swedish Navy’s current submarine fleet, as well as a project focusing on battery development, to ensure capabilities both at present and long-term.

“We are proud to be a trusted partner to FMV in securing submarine capabilities for the Swedish Navy. These orders give us the opportunity to continuously plan for the best way forward together with the customer,” said Lars Tossman, head of business area Kockums.

HSwMS Södermanland (Söd) is a Swedish naval submarine, launched in 1988 and currently in active service. She is the third ship of the Västergötland-class submarine and named after Södermanland, Sweden. The submarine design combined the best properties from the Sjöormen class and the Näcken class. Submarines of the Västergötland class had greater submarine hunting capacity than previous classes, partly due to the fact that they were equipped with a new modern submarine torpedo. The submarines in the Västergötland class were able to fire up to six heavy and six light wire-guided torpedoes at the same time against different targets.
