Rohde & Schwarz will equip the German Navy’s NH90 Multi-Role Frigate Helicopter (MRFH), with SOVERON family airborne radios that include embedded COMSEC. Each aircraft is fitted with three VHF/UHF transceivers plus spares. The German Navy navy will receive 31 helicopters – a naval version of the NH90 – that offer close-range protection, ASuW and ASW, transport, and search and rescue capabilities. The transceiver’s interfaces allow external devices or an external encryption device to be connected and guards the naval distress frequency, thereby remaining future-proof. The SOVERON family airborne transceiver uses state-of-the-art communications algorithms that were standardized throughout NATO, and particularly for naval applications.
We are very proud to have our equipment deployed on this major naval asset of our national customer,” says Stefan Pleyer, Vice President Market Segment Avionics, Rohde & Schwarz. “With 8000+ SOVERON family airborne radios in use worldwide on over 70 different airborne platforms, we ensure that we deliver a safe, future-ready investment for today’s navies on time and on budget.”
The NHIndustries NH90 is a medium-sized, twin-engine, multi-role military helicopter. It was developed in response to NATO requirements for a battlefield helicopter which would also be capable of being operated in naval environments. The NH90 was developed and is manufactured by NHIndustries, a collaborative company owned by Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo (formerly AgustaWestland) and Fokker Aerostructures. The primary role of the NFH version is autonomous anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface unit warfare (ASuW), mainly from naval ships. These aircraft are equipped for day and night, adverse weather and severe ship motion operations.
Rohde&Schwarz offers state-of-the-art wideband waveforms to achieve information superiority. Applications range from pure voice to high-speed tactical data covering all airborne platform scenarios. The waveforms permit reliable and secure communications in a fast-moving, harsh environment. Fast frequency hopping, advanced encryption technologies, simultaneous voice and data transmission and embedded mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) capability are just a few examples of superior technology. Customized national data link solutions Based on the internationally accepted SCA standard, the strict separation between radio platform and waveform application allows procurement authorities to fully modify this part of the radio in line with national requirements. Developing an indigenous national waveform, including the crypto algorithm, gives authorities true independence.
