CAMAC Add-on Protection for German Army’s Wiesel 1 Armoured Weapons Carrier

NP Aerospace, a world leading armour technology manufacturer and vehicle integrator, has been awarded a contract by FFG Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft mbH for the German Army’s WIESEL 1 Armoured Weapons Carrier (AWC) vehicle. NP Aerospace will supply its lightweight CAMAC armour solutions for 181 AWC vehicles over a two-year period. CAMAC applies to three AWC was developed for the German Army to meet a requirement for an air-transportable light armoured tracked vehicle, ensuring they remain in service beyond 2030. CAMAC is a patented, composite vehicle armour solution that provides ultra-light enhanced survivability for platform and crew, increased ground manoeuvrability and improved air transportability.

CAMAC is a patented multi-hit armor solution of composite material for new and existing platforms against a variety of threats, including small and mittelkalibriger weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) or rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). The ultra-lightweight protection elements improve the survivability of platform and crew, but do not limit the mobility in the field and the air transportability. CAMAC protection solutions can be prepared for the Level 2 to 5 according to STANAG 4569th The CAMAC add-on protection with high protection level can provide the same protection performance as steel solutions in up to 50% less weight.

James Kempston, CEO of NP Aerospace, says of the contract and the relationship with FFG that it “further highlights NP Aerospace’s world-class armour technology and our ability to deliver complex vehicle armour integration programmes on time and on budget.
Helge Carstensen, Director of the Military Programs Division at FFG, adds “[…] this contract is an important project for us and at the same time a confirmation of the good work of the FFG during the Service Life Extension measures. This will further strengthen our position as a reliable supplier to the German armed forces and will once again prove our ability to deliver on schedule and on budget.”
