1724th Airdefence Regiment troops in the Russian Eastern Military District have received and inducted first of the country’s S-300V4 air defense systems. Anti-aircraft personnel of the military district received training to operate the systems at the Kapustin Yar training range in the Astrakhan Region earlier this year. The Almaz-Antey S-300V4 (NATO reporting name: SA-10 Grumble) is an advanced highly mobile air defense missile system designated to protect vital military and administrative facilities and groupings of forces against strikes by ballistic and aerodynamic air attack weapons.The S-300V4 is an upgraded version of the S-300VM missile system with better tactical capabilities owing to the latest computer and electronics advances and sophisticated components. The S-300V4 can destroy ballistic and aerodynamic threats within a range of 350 kilometers (217 miles).
It includes new, more advance computational components, which have expanded its range by100 km (to 400 km). The modernized is 1.5-2.3 times more effective in its anti-missile defense capabilities. Actually, it is optimized for interception of cruise missiles with the ability to engage up to 24 aerial targets simultaneously or 16 ballistic targets in various combinations. The S-300V4 is capable of shooting down medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBM) with a maximum range of 2,500 kilometers. The Russian Armed Forces plans call for the upgrade of nine S-300V3 brigades to the S-300V4 standard by 2020.
The Russian Armed Forces ordered the Almaz-Antey Concern S-300V4 air defense missile system in 2012. The first example was delivered in December 2014. Compared with previous-generation systems, the S-300V4’s coverage has increased two-to-threefold and its maximum range has been extended. This guarantees the interception of medium-range ballistic missile warheads. The S-300V4 is an advanced highly-mobile air defense system with great antimissile potential. It can defend strategic facilities and troops against ballistic and aerodynamic threats.
