The Oshkosh JLTV is a version of the company’s Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV). The JLTV programme was initiated by the US Armed forces to find a new highly capable vehicle to substitute the iconic Humvee. The Oshkosh JLTV is the next-generation light tactical wheeled vehicle with an unprecedented combination of protection, mobility, transportability, and net-ready systems integration. The JLTV has two variants a two seat and a four seat variant, as well as a companion trailer (JLTV-T). The JLTV is a light utility and combat multi-role vehicle that is expected to deliver a level of protection similar to that of current, but far heavier and less maneuverable, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) class designs, and much better than the latest armored HMMWVs.

The Oshkosh vehicle offers the Core1080 crew protection for survivability, turret operated systems, remote weapons systems, and tube-launched missile system. The general-purpose JLTV can be armed with a Boeing compact laser weapon system (CLWS) and a Kongsberg Protector LW 30 remote weapon system (RWS) with an M230LF cannon or a Samson dual-stabilised remote weapon system (RWS) with M230 LF gun. The utility variant can be installed with a Boeing short-range air defence (SHORAD) launcher integrating an M299 launcher with four Hellfire missiles and an M3P .50 calibre machine gun.

The JLTV is powered by a Duramax V8 turbo-diesel engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Oshkosh JLTV family of vehicles is equipped with the TAK-4iâ„¢ intelligent independent suspension system, allowing the JLTV to deliver superior ride quality at speeds 70 percent faster than today’s top-performing tactical wheeled vehicles. The suspension can be adjusted using internal controls based on the terrain type. The JLTV can be air transported internally by a C-130, C-5, and C-17 or externally by CH-47 and CH-53.

The JLTV family and its nomenclature evolved throughout the development process and to date the U.S. Army has allocated M designations to four individual JLTV configurations. The JLTV family now consists of three base vehicle platforms, Utility (JLTV-UTL), Close Combat Weapons Carrier (JLTV-CCWC) and General Purpose (JLTV-GP). The Utility base vehicle platform is a two-door configuration, the General Purpose and Close Combat Weapons Carrier base vehicle platforms are a four-door configuration. Standard U.S. military M-designators are applied base vehicle platforms when outfitted to a specific Mission Package Configuration.
