The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has leased the MV Mentor, a 193-meter cargo vessel, to support the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) training requirements. This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to maintaining a robust and well-prepared naval force through innovative training solutions. Janes reported that the MV Mentor, leased under a commercially owned and operated arrangement, is set to play a crucial role in training the RSN’s National Servicemen (NSmen). These reservists form a vital component of Singapore Armed Forces defense strategy, and the MV Mentor will provide them with enhanced training opportunities. Additionally, the 193-meter cargo vessel will participate in selected maritime exercises and operations, further integrating into the navy’s operational framework.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has yet to release detailed specifications of the MV Mentor. However, open-source information reveals that the vessel was constructed in 2003 as a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) cargo ship by the renowned German shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft. With a displacement of approximately 23,000 tonnes, the MV Mentor features three cargo decks accessible via a starboard ramp and an aft ramp. The vessel is powered by two MaK 9M43 engines, enabling it to achieve a top speed of about 21 knots and a cruising speed of around 14 knots. The MV Mentor will replace the MV Avatar, an older general cargo vessel previously repurposed for training operations. This transition marks a significant upgrade in training resources, offering the RSN more advanced and versatile capabilities.

Owned by Singapore-based bunker craft operator Hong Lam Marine, the MV Mentor will be operated and maintained by the company throughout its tenure with the RSN. Hong Lam Marine owns and operates a fleet of 35 tankers, specializing in the transportation of petroleum products and chemicals. The company’s extensive experience in ship management and chartering ensures that the MV Mentor will be maintained to the highest standards, providing reliable service for naval training exercises. This leasing arrangement with Hong Lam Marine highlights a collaborative approach between the commercial maritime sector and the defense forces, showcasing a model of efficiency and mutual benefit. The integration of the MV Mentor into the RSN’s training program is a testament to Singapore’s proactive measures in enhancing its defense readiness and maritime operational capabilities.
