The Finland’s Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen has greenlit a pivotal service contract for the advancement of the F-35 project. The authorization, backed by the Finance Committee of the Government, marks a strategic leap in reinforcing the country’s defense capabilities. The contract, entrusted to Patria Aviation Oy, encompasses the development of crucial industrial cooperation capabilities for the Air Force’s F-35 project. It spans a spectrum of services, including the establishment of infrastructural support, acquisition of essential equipment, and the implementation of information systems vital for production.

Valued at a maximum of EUR 111.6 million, with EUR 90 million earmarked for the initial phase (2023-2026), this investment ensures the cultivation of domestic expertise crucial for maintaining and servicing the F-35 system. Notably, it promises a substantial employment boost, with an estimated 600 person-years directly attributed to Patria Aviation Oy, extending its impact well into the 2040s. This decision aligns with Finland’s commitment to self-reliance in defense operations. By fostering indigenous capabilities, Finland secures the autonomy to manage expertise and technology integral to sustaining the F-35 system, ensuring operational reliability even in extreme conditions.

“The services being procured now make it possible for Finland to build a strong service and maintenance capability for the F-35 system. This is central to the military security of the F-35 system. In addition, these services acquired from Patria and the resulting infrastructure and know-how will create an F-35 competence center in Finland, which will strengthen Finland’s position in the F-35 user community,” says the Deputy Director of the Logistics Department of the Defense Forces, Engineer Brigadier General Juha-Matti Ylitalo.

The agreement not only fulfills industrial cooperation obligations with Lockheed Martin and Pratt & Whitney but also amplifies Finland’s role in the global defense supply chain. This initiative resonates deeply with the core objectives set forth in the HX fighter project, mandating a minimum of 30% industrial cooperation to fortify national security and bolster the domestic economy. The procurement signifies more than just a contractual milestone; it represents a critical stride toward enhancing Finland’s defense infrastructure, ensuring self-sufficiency in maintaining and servicing the F-35, a linchpin in the country’s defense strategy.
